Dear Elected Representative,

I am writing as your constituent to ask you to support the policy outlined in the Americas Policy Institute petition, “Petition to Close the U.S. Department of Education and Return Education Authority to the States.”

I am asking you to support the lawful actions necessary to close the U.S. Department of Education and return responsibility for education to the states, local communities, parents, teachers, and the people.

The Constitution does not expressly delegate authority over education to the federal government. Education has historically been primarily a state and local responsibility, and I believe decisions affecting our children should be made as close as possible to the students, parents, teachers, and communities directly affected by them.

I am asking you to support a policy that would:

• Close the U.S. Department of Education rather than simply transfer its bureaucracy and programs to another federal agency.

• • End federal education programs, mandates, regulations, funding mechanisms, and funding conditions used to direct, regulate, control, or influence state and local education policy, and return education authority and responsibility to the states and the people.

• Return education funding, authority, and accountability to the states and local communities.

• Restore meaningful parental authority, transparency, and educational choice.

• Allow states to establish their own academic standards, testing requirements, teacher policies, school-choice programs, and accountability systems.

• Protect parental involvement in decisions concerning their children's education and provide parents meaningful access to curriculum, instructional materials, and educational records.

• Focus education on reading, writing, mathematics, science, history, civics, financial literacy, technology, vocational training, and practical skills that prepare students for adult life.

• Return responsibility for special education to the states while providing for an orderly transition so children currently receiving services are not unnecessarily deprived of those services.

• Restore meaningful classroom discipline and give teachers reasonable authority to maintain safe and orderly learning environments.

• Allow state and local authorities to determine how best to secure and harden their schools based upon the needs of their own communities.

• Protect children from sexually explicit material and leave discussions concerning personal beliefs about sexuality and gender to parents and families, while permitting factual biological and medical instruction concerning human anatomy, puberty, reproduction, pregnancy, reproductive health, and disease prevention.

This proposal is not asking Washington to reorganize federal education under a different department or agency.

It is asking Washington to return education authority to the states and the people.

I respectfully ask you to review this petition, publicly state your position on it, and take the lawful legislative action available to your office to advance or implement these reforms.

If you choose to ignore or dismiss this petition, I will take that as a failure to represent the people you were elected to serve. I will remember that when I vote, and I will encourage others to do the same.

We the People have had enough. Too many elected officials prioritize special interests over their constituents and avoid accountability. That era is ending. We will continue to organize, speak with one voice, petition our government, and hold public officials accountable through every lawful means available.
