PRISON REFORM
Petition to Reform Prisons with Recycling and Food Programs
We, the undersigned citizens, demand prison reforms to make inmates sort trash at landfills and raise and prepare their own food, cutting taxpayer costs and teaching skills. Prisons cost $80 billion yearly, yet 43% of inmates reoffend within three years.
Sorting trash for recycling, sold on the open market, offsets costs, as seen in Marion County’s $10,000 savings.
Raising food—from calf to beef Wellington or wheat to cake—teaches agriculture, animal husbandry, and culinary skills, reducing recidivism.
We demand Federal, State and Local representatives:
- Mandate prisoners sort landfill trash for recycling, selling products to reduce costs.
- Require inmates to raise and prepare food, learning farm-to-table skills.
- Fund culinary training for post-release jobs.
- Use savings for rehabilitation and mental health programs.
